The destination matters less than the structure. A well-structured trip to somewhere ordinary beats a badly structured trip to somewhere remarkable, every time, when there are small children involved.
Destinations that genuinely work
Singapore is the one we recommend most for a first trip. Short flight, no meaningful jet lag, everything is close together, the food is safe, and if something goes wrong medically the standard of care is excellent. It is expensive per day but efficient enough that you need fewer days.
Dubai works for similar reasons and is cheaper. The desert overnight is genuinely memorable for children around eight and above.
Thailand — Bangkok plus one island — offers the best value, though the internal travel needs care.
Bali is excellent from about age six, less so below that: the drives between areas are long and windy.
We would generally steer away from multi-city Europe for a first trip with under-sevens. The travel days are the problem, not the destinations.
Structure the days properly
- One fixed thing per day. Not three. Everything else is optional and decided that morning.
- Protect the afternoon. Whether that is a nap or the hotel pool, build the day around it rather than fighting it.
- Every third day does nothing. This feels wasteful when planning and is the reason the trip works.
- Eat early. Book dinner for 6.30pm. You will have better service and calmer children.
The things that matter more than the itinerary
Room configuration. A connecting room or a suite with a door is worth considerably more than a better location. Everyone sleeps.
The transfer. After a long flight, a pre-arranged car with a child seat already fitted is worth whatever it costs. This is not the moment to be negotiating at a taxi rank.
Medical basics. Carry your paediatrician's number, your child's weight in kg written down, and any regular medication in original packaging with the prescription. Dosing abroad is calculated by weight.
Flight timing. Overnight flights work well for children who sleep on planes and are miserable for those who do not. You already know which yours is. Book accordingly, even if it costs more.
What we do differently for family bookings
We confirm room configuration with the property directly rather than trusting a booking site, check that cots are actually available rather than "on request", arrange child seats in every transfer, and build the itinerary at a pace that matches the ages travelling. It takes longer to plan and it is the difference between a holiday and an ordeal.
